Sustainability

Here in Pepper Point, we care a lot about the environment! And to us, sustainability is more than being eco-friendly.

Materials

Since day one, I’ve been committed to using the least amount of plastic I can, unless necessary. I try to find a balance between materials, cost and quality before coming up with new designs.

  • Many of my items are only lightly packaged or wrapped in something paper-based.

  • When it comes to shipping, all materials are also paper-based. I use ink stamps to brand my envelopes and boxes, rather than stickers.

  • Some products (eg. stickers and clay charms) must be made from plastic-based materials to ensure they are durable and high-quality.

  • I try my best to source materials from Australia (where I am based) to be conscious of the carbon footprint that comes from shipping.

  • Handmaking most of my products allows me to reduce and have more control over what happens with excess materials.

Process + Value

Valuing original, handmade work is very important to me. In a world where everyone is expected to be in a rush, I want to say “You’re allowed to take your time.”

  • As I grow Sando + Friends, I’m aiming towards more slow-made designs that show they are made by hand. eg. handmade clay charms instead of acrylic keyrings.

  • I do not support sales culture.

    • My products are not priced with the expectation of discounting them to drive sales.

    • You will never find me holding entire store sales or participating in events, like Black Friday, that promote consumerism and mass production.

    • Unless the cost of living or materials changes (ie. I have to increase my prices for some things), you can be sure that the price you pay for my work will always be the same on any day. You will never be hit with a surprise sale the day after you order something. <3

  • Instead of discounts, I like to give freebies to thank you for your support! Apart from not supporting sales culture, as a small business, freebies are more manageable and don’t cut into my earnings. They let me continue doing what I love while still being able to give you gifts.

Community

When it comes to being eco-friendly and supportive of slowmade, it’s impossible to be 100% perfect. But I’ve found art and creativity to always be my tool for connecting with people. If I can use my platform and community to advocate for sustainability in any form, then together we can make an even bigger impact!
